The Quilombo, a settlement born of the need of escaped slaves, spread to different parts of Brazil. Later on, the natives also found refuge in the Quilombos. One of the most famous quilombos was the Quilombo dos Palmares, situated in a mountainous region of the Nordeste. It is here that, before he was assassinated, Zumbi, the great unappeased leader of the Quilombo dos Palmares, set himself up as a liberator of the oppressed.
The quilombos phenomenon is linked to a survival instinct which developed under different names in Mexico, in the Caribbean and in South America. It is the extraordinary birthplace of an Afro-Latino-American fraternity which is forever etched in the tradition of «Son Jarocho», «La Cumbia», «El Festejo», «O Xote», «El Toque de Guiro» and lots more besides...
