Weill Times, a black tango is a new interpretation of some of Kurt Weill’s best songs. Inspired by the tango rhythms that feature in many of the songs, Kurt and the Sophisticated Lady’s swinging approach focus on the beauty of the melodies and on the power and hard realism of the texts.

The songs, written for 1920s Berlin musical theatre, 1930s Paris and the Broadway of the 1940s, demonstrate Kurt Weill’s unique blend of classical music, jazz and dance. Kurt and the Sophisticated Lady pay full respect to both the musical quality and the theatrical ambitions of the songs.

The Belgian-British group, Kurt and the Sophisticated Lady, was formed in 2013 by singer Penelope Turner and pianist Andrew Wise. For this, their first CD, they are joined by Raphaël D’Agostino (trumpet), Hendrik Vanattenhoven (doublebass) and Peter Ploegaerts (drums and percussion).
