Mr Diagonal and the Black Light Orchestra est une formation musicale qui se situe aux confluents des traditions du music-hall anglais et du mouvement surréaliste belge. Formé en 2005, basé à Bruxelles et composé de cinq musiciens, le Black Light Orchestra se distingue par un univers intrigant et drôle où la rigueur musicale est au service de l'absurde. Le compositeur/leader du groupe est le pianiste-chanteur écossais Daniel Barbenel, alias Mr Diagonal. Il écrit une musique où la pop anglo-saxonne (celle des Beach Boys, des Beatles...), l'harmonie « fin de siècle » et le rock'n roll énergique forment un ensemble homogène, décalé et merveilleux. Les textes, quant à eux sont autobiographiques (My Life is a Broken Bicycle), d'inspiration « rock chrétien » (Jesus was a Hippy), historique (Florence Nightingale), ou font part des réflexions de l'auteur sur les animaux (Busy Bee, A Happy Kangaroo upon the Moon, Space Bunny...).

The musical group the "Black Light Orchestra" is an inspired marriage between 2 unusual traditions: British music-hall and Belgian surrealism. Founded in 2005, based in Brussels and composed of 5 musicians, the BLO's music is intriguing and droll, where musical rigor is placed firmly at the service of the absurd. The Scottish singer-pianist-composer Daniel Barbenel, whose songs and compositions are influenced equally by music-hall, english pop and classical music, is accompanied by 4 musicians: saxophones, flutes, keyboard, drums and vibraphone. An assortment of unusual objects completes the musical landscape; percussion, toys and analogue electronics all contribute to the unexpected and joyful atmosphere of their concerts. Mr Diagonal and the Black Light Orchestra is een muziekgroep die zich plaatst tussen de music-hall traditie en het belgishe surrealisme. Opgericht in Brussel in 2005, gevormd door vijf muzikanten, The Black Light Orchestra onderscheidt zich met een intrigerende en humoristische wereld waarin muziek en absurditeit mekaar ontmoeten. De leader en componist van de groep is schotse zanger/pianist Daniel Barbenel, alias Mr Diagonal. Hij schrijft muziek waarin anglo-saksische pop (van de Beach Boys, de Beatles, ...), de « end of century » harmonie, en de enrgetische rock'n'roll een homogeen geheel vormen, zot maar fantastisch. De teksten zijn autobiografisch (My Life is a Broken Bicycle), geïnspireerd door « christlijke rock » (Jesus was a Hippy), historisch (Florence Nightingale), of beïnvloed door de auteur's bedenkingen over dieren (Busy Bee, A Happy Kangaroo upon the Moon, Space Bunny...).
